The DBT STEPS-A curriculum is designed to be delivered by general education teachers as a class that teaches all students coping strategies and decision making, especially under emotional distress. There are four primary modules that the curriculum covers: mindfulness skills, distress tolerance skills, emotion regulation skills, and interpersonal effectiveness skills. These skills have been shown to be effective in working with adolescents who struggle with emotion regulation issues. Given the importance of these skills and the emotionally difficulties many adolescents experience during middle and high school, this social emotional learning curriculum is designed to be an integrative component of the academic curriculum for middle and high school students.
With the increase in youth suicide rates, we need all the resources we can get. DBT Skills Training for Emotional Problem Solving for Adolescents (DBT STEPS-A) is a social emotional learning (SEL) curriculum developed by Dr. Mazza, Dr. Dexter-Mazza and colleagues to be implemented in middle and high schools in order to teach all adolescents effective emotion regulation, decision making, and problem-solving skills. DBT STEPS-A can be implemented at Tiers 1, 2, and 3 in schools using a multitiered systems of support (MTSS). Learn more.
