Presented by Brett Bass, Safer Homes, Suicide Aware Program Manager for Forefront Suicide Prevention Center at the University of Washington and Peter G. Schmidt, Psy.D., LMHC, Director of Counseling and Wellness Programs for the Washington Department of Veterans Affairs (WDVA). Both Brett and Peter are veterans: Brett served in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves and Peter served in the USAF and Washington National Guard.

Veterans face enormous challenges as they transition from military to civilian life. Family members, friends and colleagues of veterans also face unique challenges in supporting those who served. COVID-19 presents new anxieties that may compound these factors. Forefront’s LEARN® Saves Lives for Veterans webinar, presented in partnership with the Washington State Department of Veterans Affairs, offers perspective on the unique challenges Veterans and their families face, and teaches essential skills for support and suicide prevention, specifically tailored to those who have served, their loved ones, and those who work with or support them.

Forefront Suicide Prevention LEARN® Webinar for Construction Industry Professionals

View a recording of the webinar on Vimeo.

Presented by Kabri Lehrman Schmid, Project Superintendent for Hensel Phelps, and co-chair of Washington’s Construction Industry Suicide Prevention Workgroup, and Mike Shute, Regional Safety Specialist for Lakeside Industries.

According to the CDC, construction consistently has one of the highest suicide rates across all industries. The suicide rate in construction is about 4x greater than the national average and 5x greater than that of all other construction fatalities combined. Those working in the construction industry have unique risk factors and COVID-19 presents new anxieties that may compound these factors. Also, many veterans find employment in the construction industry. This group is also at heightened risk for suicide due to trauma exposure preceding work in construction and challenges with transition back into civilian life.

We are providing this webinar to support the construction industry by offering perspective on the unique challenges they face and teaching how to recognize signs of distress and what to do to provide support. This training is appropriate for management positions in both administrative and operational roles.

Webinars for Everyone Feeling the Impact of COVID

View a recording of the webinar here.

Presented by Charlene Ray, MSW, LICSW, Forefront Suicide Prevention trainer and school coach, and a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker who has been in practice as a therapist, mentor, grief counselor, and workshop facilitator for 35 years. Charlene teaches mindfulness in the school, K-6, and facilitates Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction for teachers.

Life, as we knew it just a few months ago, has been completely turned upside down. That feeling you are feeling but can’t seem to describe in words may be grief. People are experiencing the loss of jobs, school, hugs, social connections, sports, graduations, weddings, funerals, it seems that every area of our life has been touched. We can’t even go to the grocery store without worry and stress. And if we were already grieving a loss, coping can be complicated. What do we do with this surreal feeling of disorientation? How do we recognize the signs and symptoms of grief and how do we cope? This webinar will give you an overview of what grief looks like at any time but especially during a time of ambiguous loss. We will talk about how to care for yourself and others in a time of uncertainty.

Presented by Brett Bass, Safer Homes, Suicide Aware Program Manager for Forefront Suicide Prevention Center at the University of Washington, and Zach North, Safer Homes, Suicide Aware Program Coordinator. This curriculum,  provides a modern, compelling overview of firearms safety inclusive of firearms suicide – the leading type of firearm fatality. This course is open to all, but is particularly relevant for new or inexperienced firearms owners, those who are returning to firearms ownership after a long absence, or anyone else who wishes to attend a refresher course.
